I also love the Terminal Barber Shop on Bay St. Competent hair cuts, nice music, no inane chitchat, very polite people. @butchered: You think $17 is too expensive for a hair cut? Please!

POMPADOUR...where is the best place to get a pompadour haircut in the toronto area, or even north of toronto? im looking for someone who actually does alot of rockablliy hairstyles and in particular the pompadour.
ahah that was alex cutting your hair... lol
Tip Top Barber @ 1685 St Clair w is definitely the best place for razor cut & design. And the price is great especially on Tuesday.
i used to go to him back in the day when he was on christie,
And thanks to blogto.com for posting the vorable review of Ralphs.

Also, hes darned st. And come on--he met Elvis!
Whats everyones take on tipping a barber? Ive never done it before, assuming my $20 is going mostly to pay for service anyways (minus various expenses, but a service fee no less). But it seems that some people tip. Thoughts?
I tip--the Terminal is $17 so I just hand over a $20 and call it a day.
The Best Barber Shops in Toronto barber school with R.O.P,Thankfully the trendsomehow reversed itselfin the last decade, and not only have younger barbers taken over chairs in old-school shops - or bought the places out altogether - but new shops have opened, eager to capture the informal ambiance and decorative style of the red-and-white-pole barber. The results can sometimes be a bit theme park, but the commitment of younger barbers cant be argued with, and the world is a safe place again for a man who just wants a haircut and a shave.
If youre looking for a haircut, go somewhere else..if youre looking for a barber go to The Forum Barber Parlour. Appointment only.
HEAR YE! HEAR YE!
I definitely would not recommend Alex Cuts. I went in today at around 5 PM and place was pretty empty, which in hindsight I should have recognized as a bad sign, given that the place is in a pretty busy area. Anyway, I went in and was immediately asked to wait, which I did for 10 minutes until I started to get the feeling that I was wasting my time. But as I was getting up to leave, one of the guys who as sitting there got up and offered to cut my hair; Id assumed he was just one of the customers since the whole time he was just sitting chit-chatting, as were some other people, who I presume now where also working there. Since at that point I didnt feel like wasting more time waiting at another place, I thought, what the heck, I might as well get a haircut since Im already here, even though I was annoyed for having been made to wait indefinitely and had no patience anymore for unprofessionalism. That was a mistake. The haircut I got was the worst haircut Ive ever had. The guy was obviously sloppy and careless, tugged my hair when he was drying it, cut the front noticeably shorter that I had requested (even though I mentioned twice the length that I wanted), and finished with an overall irregular cut. He talked a lot, but couldnt listen, and obvious defect in his line of work! Fortunately, the haircut was quick, but I didnt understand the rush, since there werent another other customers waiting. The barber -- apparently, the proprietor -- was an Indian man, I think, with long, curly greasy hair; again, his sloppy appearance should have tipped me off, but somehow I thought not to judge him on that count. Another mistake. To be ir, there was another women barber there and perhaps shes better, but of course, I have no way of knowing that. Certainly, Im not going back to Alex Cuts to find out! And why should I? There are so many other more professional, more pleasant, and more competent barbers.
You couldnt swing a cat in Roger Janes tiny shop, which is why busy days are a gift for local coffee shops and bars, since theres only one chair for waiting customers. With its walls covered in manly vintage artwork and taxidermy, its like a barbershop distilled, which Janes has steadily turned into a tonsorial vourite since opening in 2007.More

For some reason, I feel more like tipping at a $3/bottle bar than a $12/drink ncy place. $20 still seems like a totally OK price for a serviceable haircut.

A decades-old Queen West institution since the shop was next to the onetime home of the BamBoo, Terry and his team moved to Richmond Street a few years ago. In addition to being a barber shop, its the home to an unofficial shrine to European league soccer, and chances are you can catch a game there any hour of the day. I went to Conrads Markham location and the cut was great but the the concept is amazing they have a waiting area that is a Bistro/Lounge that is very modern and retro where the sell Coffee, Tea, Juice, Soda and gourmet Veggie and Beef Patties. Loved the vibe
I used to get my hair cut by Luigi in Parkdale. Export A Greens. This is not "olde time" feeling; this is travelling in time. 1535A Queen St. W. ~$10.

In the Annex, Ive been visiting Monsieur Barber Shop & Spa near bloor/spadina. Its in my hood and I always get great hair cuts and service there!
In the basement of a Kensington vintage shop, Crows Nest is the go-to place for period hairstyles, from pompadours and ducktails to the regular maintenance required on a really impressive moustache and set of muttonchops. What about my man Corrado at Bathurst/Richmond!?! Over 50 years at the same location, but he plans on retiring in the next year or two. His little hole-in-the-wall shop is the ultimate guy haven.
So im looking for a good spot to get a cut and a design on my head , a place that really knows what they are doing for a good price
Corrados is like, "man heaven"--the guy is old school. He talks about his life (though good chunks are in Italian, so sometimes you have to take his word for it hes funny), and his cuts are amazing.
If youre in the Scarborough area and looking for a de, Kedar (Finch and Birchmount, 2nd floor of plaza over Chinese Restaurant)is real place to check. $15 cuts and they also have other barber services offered.
I too had my haircut at the new barber shop in Don Mills after seeing Jasons post, great cut and nice clean place, Ill go back again! Thanks Jason!

At the risk of being called an obtuse and probably uncouth, but, any chance someone could comment on what a normal haircut costs in one these shops?

Finally had the owner, who was so busy speaking in French to his buddy that he misunderstood what I wanted and gave me a brushcut. I came in with about 4.5 inches of hair and left with 1/2 inch! He didnt bother clarifying such an incredible change in length, just ran his buzzer right down the middle of my head, so it was irreversable. When I saw a huge hank of hair ll in my lap I looked up in horror. When I asked him what in the hell he was doing he had the brass to get angry with me, saying I miscommunicated. Well excuse me, but I was speaking English, not French or Egyptian or Arabic or whatever the hell their first language is.
Please try with Ben from Ivan Hair Salon. He is the best de cut in Toronto.
For a hot shave I tried Truefitt & Hill - - who are in the Scotia Plaza at 40 King West.

This bright, old-style barber shop at Church and Wellesley has plenty of chairs and short line ups, and a price list thats hard to beat. The friendly staff add to the package, as does the ct that location alone dictates that Hos haircutters have to keep things neat and contemporary.More
DO NOT GO TO THIS OVER-PRICED, HALF-ASSED BUTCHER SHOP!
He usually has a couple older guys hanging around chatting and watching TV in there--a real community place. He had an anniversary a while back,a nd hired a caterer and invited all his customers over for food and drinks as a thank you.

Ivans on Victoria St Toronto, ever since I first went there in the late 80s and had San San cut my hair, I have enjoyed the personable atmosphere and the professionalism of everybody there. San San, Carmen, Bruno, Ben.. they are all good. My son had his first haircut there, and he recently returned to get his hair done for university.
I have been going to Tonys Barber Shop on Bayview for fifteen years. The service is excellent, the decor minimalist with excellent colour, lighting and marvelous jazz music. I like the razor trim, the use of scissors and the attention to detail. Amir the owner is an exceptional stylist and the prices are extremely reasonable. There is a full selection of grooming products available for purchase. Prompt, friendly service. Five stars.

A new barber shop/ mens salon has opened in the Shops at Don Mills called Barba Mens Salon! I had both a great haircut and a straight razor shave done there this weekend. The female barbers that were there are friendly and skilled while the shop is clean and classy, a bit more upscale then the ones on this top list. Finally Don Mills has a great place for just men to have their haircut!
This man will make you laugh with his jokes and even make you an expresso while your having a cut. BARBU JOE WE LOVE YOU MAN.
The best hair salons in Toronto
Of course we are all going to push our barbers and thats what Im going to do. Since I moved to Toronto in 2000, Ive been going to Truefit & Hill. I work downtown so it is also convenient. For the money, you wont be dissapointed. Great bunch of guys, first name basis.

Ivans Hair Saloon, located at 21 Victoria Street (416 364 3876) has been our barber shop since the 1980s. Family members (ther and brother)have been looked after by the amazing staff at Ivans before that! Whether you sit with San-San, Bruno, Carmen, or Ben behind you, the service you experience will take you back to another era when care,
time, professionalism, and attention to detail were the hallmarks of a service-oriented shop. At Ivans they still are. In an era where service industries seem to place an emphasis on short-term profit over longer term sustainable customer loyalty, the wonderful people at Ivans stand out as an oasis of quality care and personal commitment to caring for customers needs. Thats why customers have been coming here for decades, and why the next generation is following after them. Our thanks to everyone at Ivans for getting to the root of what makes a great Barber Shop!

Any recommendations on where to go if youre below the $70/cut Grateful Head crowd, but above the "number 4 all around" crowd?
I think by "the man is a pig", you must mean, "the man is a man". No ke, pretend sensitivity--Im sure if he were less than his seventy odd years hed be a little more "correct", but I find when I visit him I am reminded of what we have lost in the culture of malehood. Corrado is the man.
Located just down from Yonge Dundas Square, Onyx is as urban as it gets, downstairs in a bright basement room decorated in a black and white scheme. There are lots of chairs, staffed by a boisterous, friendly group of haircutters, and if you can perform feats of strength on the pull-up bar by the door you can win a free cut, but dont get cocky - barely ten customers have ever managed to win that deal.More

Also if your looking for Faux-Hawks, Beard Shaping, Outlines, Designs/Hair Patterns. Onyx is the place to go!
Best place in Toronto to get a de is Onyx Barbers hands down!

On the second floor of an old house overlooking Trinity Bellwoods Park, Garrisons probably has the nicest view of any barber shop in the city. Owners Doug Stewart and Hollis Hopkins are eager to create a neighbourhood vibe with the new shop, so they offer deals with local businesses - your haircut could also come with coffee and dessert at the Swan or a discount at local haberdashers Oliver Spencer. Barbers Alan and Sydney will also take great care with your head.More
Open since 2005, Mikes offers a full range of services, including des, on a stretch of Bloor thats neither Bloordale nor Koreatown. Its the kind of place where ambitious young turk barbers go to hone their chops in one of Mikes empty chairs, so be prepared for a bit of barber turnover.More
Here are the best barber shops in Toronto.
Owner Nigel took over an old east end barber a few years ago, which was re-done and streamlined to offer 21st century cuts. Salon-trained, like his second chair Tino, theyve gone back to basics here, though their website showcases some wild des and hair sculptures that betray Nigels roots in British haircutting competitions.More
With two locations just around the corner from each other at Bay and Dundas, the Terminal has made line ups their enemy. Sandys Barber Shop on Yonge st. south of St. Clair (in between Spaccos and Boccone restaurants) has to be on this list. He has been a main stay for athletes and sports personalities for year. Customers of note: Don Cherry, the entire 1967 Stanley Cup Winning Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Team (including coaches and trainers), and even Neil Youngs late dad (who was a great Toronto sports writer in his dad). He has been at that location since day one.
The Forum Barber Parlour did it for me. Great team of guys and they make everyone feel like someone special. I left that barbershop walking with a different kind of confidence. Yonge street just south of Finch. Appointment only
I recommend The Forum Barber Parlour. What a nice place, upscale, super clean, modern and a great barber team. They are located on Yonge St., just south of Finch on the east side. Its appointment only and you get a free beverage.
Are you kidding me,Im surprised Corrado, or whatever that guy on bathurst calls himself hasnt been shut down by public health. That place is a filthy, dirty shop - he doesnt clean his razors and the man is a pig. I was in waiting for a haircut and had to leave before taking my chances.
Scarborough location ask for Blade or Brown, amazing. Google it.
One of the oldest Barbershops around at 416A Parliament ST. Is now Barber Cuts. Chris is Back.
The best barber shops in Toronto are proof that sometimes - just sometimes - things can work out for the best. A decade ago, it was worth worrying that old-style barbering was a trade that would soon disappear from our streets, as a generation of barbers retired and barber shops went the way of shoemakers and TV repairmen. The odd high end barbering boutique in a hotel or upscale department store might have remained, but the two-to-four chair shop, with its stack of dog-eared magazines, TVs tuned to sports and tall jars of Barbicide would have been replaced by hair salons staffed with stylists. For some of us, it was a future not worth living.
Ive been going to San San at Ivans Hair Salon for years. One reason is that I get a good hair cut, but another is that I can pay her with the community currency, Toronto Dollars. By so doing, a little bit of good is done for someone else. San San understands the concept that by working in community, we can strengthen our connections and our bonds. Her passion for caring for the orphans in Burma, her commitment to a difference and being socially active have transformed our client -business relationship into a good friendship. We both know that friendship is the way to make the world work. I go to Ivans Hair Salon for more than just a haircut. I go for my souls food. When I walk out the door, I feel lighter and brighter.
good to see gus on the list. I went to him for 15 years, always a great cut. These days it is the Terminal barber shop hands down. Karim used to work at trufitt and hill. He now runs his shop without the snob ctor of bay and king. Cant believe the bad comments people made. This is the only place to get a haircut downtown.

The worse haircut I ever got was at Terminal. They were super nice, but managed to give mt the most messed up haircut Ive ever had. Never again. Ive been pretty loyal to Peter at Trufitt & Hill, but when he was on sick leave I didnt know where else to go. Im glad Peter is back. Hes a genius. Plus, Peter washes my hair after the cut so I dont leave with drifters all over my ce and neck.
Actually the best Barbershop in the city of Toronto and the GTA was(past tense)"No Substitute Hair Design" on Lakeshore Blvd West & Islington Road in the southside of Etobicoke. The service was bulous and the artbarber school with R.O.P those artists did on those clients were [email protected] amazing. Sorry for the language.... The owner/artist was very innovative with his designs and he never ded, but blended the hair within its self. So when your hair starts to grow back it would look very smooth till the next visit.
With locations in London, Chicago and Las Vegas, Truefitt & Hill is a haircutting shop for the executive class, and preferably by appointment. Torontos two Truefitts are in the business district, where the barbers wear ties and work with the quiet discretion of a veteran waiter or bartender in a high end joint. Prices are what youd expect, but the services on offer, which include massages and manicures, are truly impressive.More

Im happy to agree with John, Roger, Joy and the others above whove recommended "Ivans" on Victoria (just east of Yonge along King). Ive had my hair cut there since around 1990 and I think their history extends back another 25 years (or more?) before that. $15 for a standard mens cut and I know they do womens hair as well. My hairstyle is and could probably be done easily almost anywhere, but an honest friendliness and camaraderie at "Ivans" has kept me as a regular for two decades and counting.

WORST HAIRCUT OF MY LIFE AT TERMINAL BUTCHER SHOP!

Tip top barber is the spot not only to get your hair cut, but to relax, talk about sports, and listen to music and play arcade game. They do the sickest de way, bald des, taper de, designer parts. Da guy that own da shop is Steve. They give the sickest design. Every Tuesday $10 for a cut. show student card and received a discount. They are located @ 1685 St Clair ave w/caledonia. They specializing in all hair types. Friendly atmosphere

Went here three times to all 3 of the regular barbers during 2009. The first two were irly half-assed, with minor errors and difficulty communicating with barbers whose first language isnt English. This is also the highest priced barber shop Ive ever been to and the results did not correspond to the price.
de away a good barber shop but just north of it on eglinton west there dozens of better shops. just in a 3 block span you hit about 10 different shops and none of them made this list. come on blogt.o. do some better research
One of the best things that has ever happened to me. Totally worth the $47 price tag, if only once. There were about 5 stages in the shave, and the guy doing in was a total expert with the blade. They use premium products including proper, warm shaving foam, and you get a manly rub-down afterwards. Never had a shave like it. Came out with a ce like a babys ass.
For example, Ralphs! Afterward, I went to Ralphs to repair the terrible haircut from Alex Cuts. Total opposite, like night and day: Ralph was courteous, careful, skillful, and a good listener! That was already obvious as I watched him cut the other customers. He took care to check several times as he was cutting whether it was what I wanted. I can definitely recommend Ralphs and will be going back for sure! Thanks, Ralph!
So am I looking for a barber or a salon? not sure , but i doubt salons have the razors like barbers do to give me that straight crisp line. So what yall think?
Ernies on Davenport and Ossignton is a great place for a great cut, and to shout the . The hair cuts are proper and the over all environment and atmosphere is great. I really enjoyed the experience as a whole. The cuts are $17 and theyre really quick. Id recommend it to anyone, you should all go check it out, you dont know what a good hair cut is until youve been there.
The best Barber shop in King and Yonge called Ivan Hair Salon. Please try this amazing place.I am the second generation client of my ther. My barber cuts my hair since I was 9 years old. Now I am 30 years old. Never change.I will bring my future son also. Ted Rogers, Conrad Black, Eaton brothers and mous lawyer Richard Clerk, Albert Schultz( soulandpepper) are in there for many years. Wash and cut 19$. The address is 21 Victoria St. Phone number is 416 364 3876.
Barber Joe !!!!! on dupont st. west of symington ave. Now hes the only true remaining barber left in toronto. hes been around since the early 50s.

Any recommendations for where I can get a good scissor cut AND/OR a full hot shave, that isnt the barber underneath the Fairmont? (Getting rid of the beard).
I think 15% or at least $2 a cut is ir. Its a personal service, like waiting tables, so its nice to tip.
my vote goes to J & H barbers at 1 adelaide place ... John (owner) is very personable, st and very good, rates around 20 dollars.
Any good barber--even a stupid mediocre barber--should have asked twice before giving me this haircut. It took 6 months to grow out.
P.S. Too bad the business never flourished with its potential. But unfortunately the neighbourhood never gave that business the proper respect it deserves. Too bad for that neighbourhood.R.I.P
Elvis made the pompadour popular BarberCuts at Queen and Woodbine Perfected it.
